Letters to the Mules

The Mules live and reside in this place of one human being, alone but never alone, a place for anybody and everybody, traveling with his or her animal companion in any one of all four directions how they choose, when they choose, living, moving with respect and reverence for this place we call Earth, one step at a time, all day every day.

In addition to many comments posted on the 3 Mules Facebook page, the Mules receive many e-mails. Here are some of the e-mails that we receive.  We appreciate reading these letters. Those that give faith, hope and energy to this place at which time connect to it and receive the magic and endless possibility of infinity.

“Blessing Mules. As you passed by my stopped car at the intersection of HWY 49 and Bell Road in Auburn, CA, my smokey-gray day truly brightened. Thank you.” Teri C., Auburn, CA 8/20/2021

“Lonely Are The Brave” This guy reminds me of the great movie about one of the last cowboys (Kirk Douglas) taking on “progress”! Also “The Last Cowboy Song” by Ed Bruce. Good stuff!” ~John B., 6/24/2021

“I saw you twice today in Atwater, California! I also saw a post on Facebook where you were reported to animal control and the Merced County Sheriffs Department was happy to report you and your animals were safe. Keep traveling and living your dream!” ~Sarah, Atwater, CA 6/21/2021

“You are awesome.  I was stopped for riding my bike on the road once, because the officer thought that I had to ride on the multi-use trail.  He lost in court and looked very silly. Best wishes.” ~James, 6/16/2021

“I saw you twice as you walked along Niblick, then Golden Hill in Paso Robles last week, June 2021.  It was a wonderful sighting. My Native American Indian ancestors would have honored you as you walk through our land.  I honor you and the MULES on your journey.” ~BJ, 6/14/2021

Monk and the Mules, there are so many who support you on this issue of safe and unharassed passage on public thoroughfares.  We pray for your safe journey and give support and friendship along the way. The state of California has a responsibility to ensure that all pedestrians have access to off road passage along roads and highways for those who choose to walk or don’t have any other option but to walk along those roads, and it should be provided as well as posted for drivers to be aware of.” Mary Jane C., 5/15/2021

“Nice to meet you. I was blown away by the well packed mules. I was on the phone with a friend from the track and I literally said I got to go there’s something amazing happening! If someone was to say I was going to meet a nomad today I would have said liar liar pants on fire. In any case when you went to WinCo the activity started. I don’t know why I forgot to tell you, mostly because when I promise to watch the mules after I gave you the lofty amount of $6.

I realized this was a responsibility.  I stood watch and the action began. I did not record it but I should have because people were coming up, wanting to interact with the mules. Which would be normally fine if the owner’s present. Plus they acted like they needed some downtime.

But one thing was very clear with the first two people  actually saw you leave, because they said, ‘yes I saw him going to the store.’ I said if you saw him leave why come saying me for permission??  So I told them the truth…pointing to your grey that one turned a hip to me. If they pull back will you help me catch them? and then they walked on…. Quickest way to get rid of people is asking for help or accept responsibility for their actions.

I stood for the first 15 minutes then realized I better get the car around, you might be awhile. I had many happy spectators until one guy in a broken down jalopy had the audacity to criticize. I was on the speakerphone actually a video call,  with my eye on the mules of course.  The man tried to threaten me and say he was going to take the mules to his house that they needed water that in 10 minutes the SPCA. Too much energy on a non-subject. At first tried to explain.  I told him this is what this man does for a living, a way of life. They’re in better condition than some I know. Finally, I forgot to tell you.. I just stood up for myself and mules. Said should mind your own business and move on!! I don’t think I’ve ever said that to anybody.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity for saying that to somebody it felt good. Today you said never let somebody tell you when to water your mule.
No I won’t. Your new friend, Shelley.” ~Shelly, Lancaster, CA 4/6/21

“Dear Mules, I enjoyed your brief visit to Ramona Family Naturals Market today. I have taken some time to read your story and philosophy.  It’s a great accomplishment for a man to know the calling of his heart and follow it. I will ponder your life, mission and message for years.” ~Robert Bradley
Ramona Family Naturals, Inc., Ramona, CA 2/20/2021

“My descendants were travelers of the Old Spanish Trail from New Mexico to California in 1838. They couldn’t have made it without the mules that carried provisions for 1700 miles. God Bless the MULES.” ~Betty P., 2/20/2021

“We love the positive energy that the #3mules brings to communities! We are honored to belong to the #3mulesnation. We believe in and support the freedom that can be accomplished between a past way of life, the present way of life, and a future way of life through acceptance, accommodations, understanding, education, regulation, and accountability! The way of life lived by the Mules is a legal way of life. Unfortunately, because of a lack of education, acceptance, understanding, regulation, and accountability, they’ve been treated unfairly, harshly, and unjustly along the way. We’re hoping to change all that through public awareness events; continued support to the Mules; calls for action when the Mules have been targeted for unlawful arrests, detainers, and impounds; informative videos to educate; ongoing notifications to law enforcement regarding their legal obligations regarding equestrian rights and motorist’s duties, obligations, and responsibilities when encountering equine travelers; and notifications to CALTRANS regarding their responsibilities and duties to maintain safe and accessible access to all public thoroughfares! There’s no reason why everyone can’t #sharetheroad and accept the way of life of others who enjoy moving from town to town and waking up under the stars!” Lori W., Bakersfield, CA, 2/16/2020

“The sight of the 3 of you took my breath away, today, as you passed our house on Winter Gardens Blvd…  For that, I would like to thank you.  I hope everyone that crosses your path is able to take a moment to themselves, to enjoy a brief moment with you, as have I.   Hope we “meet” again.” ~Katie M., Lakeside, CA 2/13/2021

I was pleasantly surprised to see the Mules and their companion in La Mesa.  I took a picture of them when they were by the Chevron station on Jackson Drive and Center Drive at 3:38 p.m., Friday, February 12, 2021.  In this age of technology, it is refreshing to see human interaction with Mother Earth.  No  abuse, just love of her.  Thank you.” ~Aurora H., La Mesa, CA 2/13/2021

You just watered the mules at my place of business in Kearny Mesa San Diego CA. What a cool thing! I am hard of hearing so it was hard to hear you with the soft spoken voice. “It was a true pleasure and a blessing to visit just now with you, Lil’ Girl and Little Ethel! Mules have the right to be ANYWHERE any other transportation is! (Never was I more free when I was homeless—it was only the harassment of others that got me down.)  Blessed Be! ~TJ, Mountain View, CA 10/11/2020

“I read about you today on Facebook. I understand you walked down a road very near to me in Folsom, CA. I’m sorry I missed you. It’s very sad that you need to remind our government of the rights of the people they are elected or hired to serve and protect. It doesn’t feel like that’s what they have in mind these days. Anyway, I just wanted to say good luck to you and may you all be well. Walk in peace. From my heart, Kathy P., Folsom, CA 9/15/2020

“Good evening sir! I saw you earlier today in Acampo and then read your story. I went back looking for you to offer you and your mules a place to stay. I see you’ve found shelter for the night. If you ever come across this area again, please know you are welcome to stay on our property. Safe Travels! ~Paula S., Acampo, CA 9/8/2020

“Hello! My name is Korra- I am 22 years old. You met me with my partner, Jason (37) yesterday and let us pet them. I read more about you and your story and it really touched me. I believe firmly and follow the Shamanic ways and was very happy and inspired to see you and hear your story. I feel very blessed to have met such a rare person. Thank you for showing me the way of the Mule.
Meeting you brightened my day- as I am going through a traumatic time in my life. Thank you for your work and ability to inspire and reach others.
Odin bless you.” ~Korra, Stockton, CA 9/8/2020

“As I looked out my office window, I saw John and his two mules walking south on Calloway, approaching  Rosedale Hwy in Bakersfield, CA.  I raced across the street with cold water and bible scriptures in hand. It was a pleasure to spend that brief moment in time chatting about his experiences and prayer. It was a pleasure to serve him with love; especially during these challenging times with covid 19 and all.  The bible says in Hebrews 13:2 that show hospitality. Some have even served angels without knowing it. He and the mules are an inspiration, as we all need to trust God, through Jesus Christ for our needs.  May God continue to bless John Sears and his mules. amen.” LWG III, Bakersfield, CA 5/17/2020

“Loving Monk, I saw a post on your visit to Pine Mountain Club on Facebook today. We own a restaurant here in Frazier Park, The Red Dot Vegetarian Kitchen, that serves all vegetarian food prepared from scratch. We would love to feed you from us if you pass through this way. What you are doing is very beautiful and we would love to support you however we can! Sending love and hope to see you.” ~Daniel S., Frazier Park, CA 2/22/2020

“The most amazing story I’ve read in a long time! God bless you and your beautiful girls/mules. Thank you for educating me and many of us in California. I’m sorry you’ve been harassed by chp/cops/law without cause. Please California stop wasting our tax money on harassing our law abiding citizens!” Irma N., Bakersfield, CA 2/9/2020

Yes, you are a blessing in the disguise of an old mule-driver.  Thank you for reminding me that there can be far more to life than the straight-jackets modern day society would seem to want us all to wear, and to believe in!  May your journey continue to be filled with the wonder, awe, and beauty that you seem to bring along with you wherever you go.” ~Scott P., 1/27/2020

Just heard about your interaction with the CHP. Sorry to hear that they seem to have gone overboard to be an inconvienence for you and the babies. I can’t comprehend how such nonsensical events can happen to good, earth loving folks.  Sending huge positive energies your way. Blessings always.” ~Sally W., 1/27/2020

“I feel so saddened by our law-enforcement not knowing the laws about letting the three mules live their life the way that our ancestors did and he’s people living their life traveling back-and-forth from state to state that it takes our law enforcement to actually arrest them and put their poor animal in the animal shelter away from them because they thought they were breaking the law when they were not maybe the law enforcement should read the laws and educate their own selves because he’s people did not break no law.” ~Candy B., 1/26/2020

Just talked to  you in Atascadero, CA. you said you had a place for overnight…your arrest was an example of ego driven law enforcement.. so sorry to see that…safe travels.” ~Tish K., Atascadero, CA, 1/26/2020

My husband saw you on the road into town this evening, he said you were being held in place by CHP. I know there is no service out there and not sure how you stay in contact with your network but if you need help, please let me know! If I ever own property with space for livestock again you would always be welcome! I hope all is well and love your message and journey. I first saw you walking by the San Luis Obispo airport maybe in 2016.” ~Leila M., Paso Robles, CA 1/23/2020

We 1st heard about you 2 years ago when we were at Buck’s in Woodside and read the article about your adventures. We had no idea that we would meet you today on the De Anza Trail near San Juan Bautista. It was a thrill to for us to see all 3 of the mules walking the trail as we were sitting there eating lunch. Thank you for stopping to chat with us briefly on your journey. We also hike for the same reason you walk – to keep that machinery of the brain in good working order. Thanks for that reminder. Safe travels, always.”
~Keith and Thais, San Juan Bautista 1/2/2020

The mules at 99 cent store

“Hello, yesterday, I saw a beautiful site of the 3 Mules in San Leandro crossing the street, and then two of the mules tied to a light post parking lot near 99 Cents Store. I was curious and so was San Leandro Police Technician. I sad Hi to the 2 mules, took a photo, but unfortunately I did not get to say hello to the 3rd mule (you). I am so grateful I got to see and visit with the mules and I love the message of connecting to earth and nature. I am curious if you have moved on from the San Leandro area and I wish all the mules a pleasant and peaceful movement on this awesome earth.” ~Charmaine G., San Leandro, CA 12/14/2019

“Hello, I happened to see you yesterday in San Lorenzo, CA and couldn’t believe my eyes. I had to go back to snap a picture of the man and his two burros crossing the street to show my boys and family. Safe travels.” ~Pat, San Lorenzo, CA 12/14/2019

3 Mules walking thru Oakland

“It was magical and dreamlike to see a man and two well loaded mules walking placidly northward on San Leandro St., Oakland, CA yesterday. You passed my place of employment mid-afternoon. I was too stunned to run outside in the pouring rain to greet you. But I wish I had done so. Now I have found out who you are: an inspiration to many. Blessings on the journey.”
~Leslie Z, Oakland, CA 12/14/2019

“Hello there! I saw you a few days ago on the side of the road close to Wilton/Elk Grove. I didn’t know who you were, but I had a funny feeling that I should stop and say hello, but I was running late to pick my kids up from school and it was not really a safe place to stop as you were kind of in a ditch on the side of the road and there were no pull outs. I mentioned to my mom today that I saw some mules with the log on the side of the road and she was so excited! She has a ranch in Ripon and owns mules herself as well as several other horses…My mom is big into backcountry riding. Happy trails to you!” ~Heather W., Elk Grove, CA 9/29/2019

“Hi Mules! First, I so enjoy and appreciate your journey. Thank you for sharing it with all of us. Second, if you are passing over Hwy 33 near the towns of Gustine and Santa Nella this year, please let me know. My family has a small farm where you are welcome to rest, water, find shade, etc. All my best to you and the mules! ~Jennifer W. 9/13/2019

“Monk & Mules! Love and blessing to you all. I live in Merced and if you still around the area I would like to help your team out with provisions or whatever is needed. If not, may the Creator bless you, guide you and protect you all. Best regards. ~Christopher W., Merced, CA 9/13/2019

“Thank you for stopping in Keyes, CA. I saw pictures of my granddaughters and it truly made their day. Thank you so much! ~Christine, 7/17/2020

“Amazing thing you’re doing there. I am too without motorcar, but I get around. Sometimes by bicycle or train or route bus. Did that many years. Cars get towed, so it’s nice to know the options. Horse stables are few around here, but they don’t get seen much. Take care, good luck. ~Kenneth H., west suburbs of Chicago, Illinois 3/31/2019

The Kids Love You! We were out on the playground of our school in Temecula this afternoon when you walked by. The kids were so excited to see a “horse” walking down the sidewalk – a rare site for sure. Hopefully they weren’t too loud, they were screaming with excitement! I think it’s great that you live the lifestyle that you do. Walk on… ” ~Carly T., Temecula, CA 3/30/2019

“Hello John, I met you on Friday night in front of the San Onofre Power Plant. You offered me an apple. I declined because I had been walking for several hours and it didn’t sound like something I wanted at the time. I asked if I could pet your mule and you said yes but not his face. So I petted his shoulder. He shifted around to look at me which kinda scared me. Anyway I was quite taken back by your kindness and I wish you and your mule safe travels. I’m gonna follow your path.” ~Chuck, 2/10/2019

“Throughout the ages man and mule and hand and horse have traveled this very same ground to feed their families, trade goods or services, to spread the good word and to better there lives in general. Today there is currently only 1 man and mule team traveling the area on foot. As an example to us all of the importance of the human and equestrian experience in the survival and development of the human race, this monk is on a journey to live within our world and still live set apart using public space to reside. I admire his bond with his animal, his devotion to his mission and the peace and enjoyment he has with his journey.” ~Robert Liles., Oceanside, CA 2/10/2019

“Yesterday I had the honor of meeting John, Paul and Little Girl. ts honestly awesome to see different examples of perseverance, dedication and ultimately happiness. John and Little Girl are known as the Monk and the Mules, they live a nomadic life up and down the West coast, walking 10s of miles daily. They enjoy their connection with nature and overall a simple life. While this may not be everyones perferred lifestyle, the concept of appreciating nature, freedom and having a balanced world is great.” ~Hillary Aguirre, Oceanside, CA 2/10/2019

“Keep moving! You’re an inspiration. You are loving the natural and raw land. Good luck on your journey! Don’t let anyone hold you back!” ~Renee 1/23/2019

“I did not have the chance to talk to you, but I was by Telegraph Road and Slauson by the 5 freeway. It was good to see you and your animals. I know you are a rich man, because I know you do this by choice and you must appreciate freedom more than the rest of us. I am happy for you. May God bless you.” ~Marco, Los Angeles, CA 1/2/2019

“I live in Yucaipa CA and was driving to work when what did I see at Starbucks, but a lovely mule!!! I wish it had been the weekend, so I could have treated you to a Starbucks and got some carrots or apples for your mule. I used to have a mule years ago…a little roan named Candy Hearts. She had such a personality. Also, my husband rode across the U.S. on the Bicentennial Wagon Train that met up in Valley Forge Pennsylvania in 1976. He was a farrier and wheelwright. Sadly he passed away 9 years ago. I have to go online and read your story. Just wanted to tell you that you made my day seeing your mule. Wishing you safe travels.” ~Lynda A., Yucaipa, CA 5/7/2018

“Beautiful story about Mr. Chen. I met him in Ventura, California (Casitas Springs).” ~Camille, Ventura, CA 5/7/2018

“Just met you today, May 3rd. I’m guessing the County of Riverside vehicle caused you concern. I do homeless outreach for the county and just wanted to offer you some water, food and hygiene supplies. I wish you safe and happy travels!” ~Amanda, Palm Springs, CA 5/3/2018

“Hey man, I just wanted to say thank you for your inspiring way of life. It’s very sad what the automobile has done to us. We’ve lost touch with the old ways. Keep on walking. I will be hiking the Pacific Crest trail at the end of April. Maybe I will see you on the trail.” ~Jason R., 3/22/2018

“Saw your mule in Poway. Love what you’re doing. Sending you good thoughts on your journey.” ~Jan K., Poway, CA 3/3/2018

“I am intrigued and extremely fascinated with your lifestyle. I cannot imagine what your journeys have brought you to but I surely do envy the freedom you have. Most people don’t see it, but I believe we are trapped in society that forces us to work our lives away to help build a system and country and that entraps us from experiencing true life. I am not as courageous as you and I believe that is what I envy most. What you are doing, I love it. I truly do with the best for you. Safe travels, long Days and pleasant nights to you friend,” ~Christopher D. 3/1/2018

“Fighting the Good Fight. I have a great deal of admiration for you and what you’re doing (e.g. living the nomadic lifestyle.) I know that your notoriety has gotten you lots of attention over the years and probably plenty of folks seeking to use you for their political agenda. A small group of citizens and I are fighting to preserve open space and a rural lifestyle here in San Diego County. The County and the two big developers are inexorably barreling towards the destruction of the little rural lands we have left by proposing to put 1000 houses in our little rural valley. Sometime in the fall, two major projects will go in front of the board of supervisors that could change the face of our little community here near Escondido (Harmony Grove and Elfin Forest). We plan on bringing our animals down to the County building to show them that the rural lifestyle is worth preserving. Would love for you to join us. Thanks for being a reminder of what we’re losing in our death march towards modernity.” ~JP, 2/28/2018

“I had the privilege to meet you and Little Girl this morning in the rain as I went to work at CSU San Marcos. I saw you and Little Girl last night on the evening news and was very happy your story ended well. I was also very excited to see you and pet Little Girl on the nose. I hope to read about your travels on your website. Take care and travel safely.” ~Margie K., San Marcos, CA 2/27/2018

“Love your story… keep trucking or muling…” ~Jean M, 2/27/2018

“My favorite equine quote applies to all the companions we have had as we travel down Life’s road. ‘When we think of those companions who traveled by our side down life’s road, let us not say with sadness that they left us behind, but rather say with gentle gratitude that they once were with us.’” ~Greg H., 2/23/2018

“I saw you in Rancho Bernardo last week. I was fascinated. Saw your mule was in good condition and wanted to stop to chat. First time I have heard of you. I hope to see you again and give you and your animals a treat and your mule a little love. I volunteer at a horse rescue. Noble creations of God! Stay safe!” ~Becky W, Rancho Bernardo, CA 2/22/2018

“I heard you’re in our neighborhood! Someone posted about your journey on Next-door – FANTASTIC story! We live in north Poway and I have my own beehives. Would love to give you some of our honey for the team! Keep up the journey and positive messages about the need to preserve open space. I couldn’t live without the ability to escape to nature!” ~Sue H., Poway, CA 2/15/2018

“I’m writing to simply say thank you for your cause. My son introduced me to your site and I’ve been following you for about a year now. I never even thought about how there are no longer pedestrian freedoms until I discovered you. I’m not sure I’d have it in me to do what you do but then again, I never dreamed I’d be able to do what I’m doing now and that’s living in a cargo van. By choice (mostly)… I could no longer afford rent in the Bay Area, so I got inspired to try. Plus I got injured on the job and am unable to work at the moment, fighting workers comp so now I live in a van with two cats and my son. It’s amazing what we are capable of doing when we must continue to exist. I keep repeating to myself, never say never.” ~Christine, 10/3/2017

“I am so happy to see someone is carrying on the tradition of Mule Skinner. My grandpa’s father and his father and his father before were all Mule drivers based in Kentucky. Thank you Sir for lightening my heart. I pray your journey is all you wish for.” ~Maurice L, 10/2/2017

“Saw you and Little Girl passing through San Benito County between Tres Pinos and Paicines today. As a walker and cyclist I appreciate what it must take to walk a mule on Airline Highway. As a veteran and guardian of the Constitution I salute you. Keep up the good fight.” ~Tony V., Brisbane, CA, 9/28/2017

“Peace and Strength. It seems to me you are living a noble life, delivering a very important message, and hurting no one. It is ironic to read on your site how a few people for whatever reasons can’t control their stupid urges to make trouble for you. And how a few law people feel so little compassion as to wake you, and treat you unkindly. The majority seem to get it, but the ones who need help the most want to impose their power over you. I hope the judge threw the case out. I also got a kick out of the Rose Parade text. Certainly, you were not dressed for such a fancy occasion, but if the Parade organizers were smarter, they’d invite you, and give you a pass. It’s rare for a person to do what they really want to do in life. Congratulations to you and the Mules for just being you. “~Joseph T., 9/11/2017

“A brighter day today. You and your mule passed by me as I was waiting for a bus on Mission Street in San Francisco today.

It really warmed my heart and took me back to other places in my life. Though I live in the City now that was not always so. Many years ago I was a cattle ranch hand in Washington State. I did not ride horses, only a tractor, but it was a lifestyle I truly enjoyed and the my favorite job of any I’ve ever had. It was self-gratifying to be in the country, in the out of doors, and with the animals.

A few years later I traveled to Africa with the US Peace Corps, and again found myself working with animals. Mostly the sheep and goats of sedentary farmers. There lies the dilemma. Sedentary agriculture there long ago brought about a myriad of boundaries, fences, roads, communities, and highways to connect them. All of these cut off traditionally nomadic lifestyles and created conflict which continues even today. Most of the U.S. went through this about 150 years ago as you well know, and maybe in some very rural areas still does.

I have visited your website and agree with your observation. Today there is no safe and effective passage from state to state for anything other than motor-vehicles or aircraft, and rarely an open place to stay without fee or trespassing. In other words, people are not free to move about and particularly not without financial means which should not have to be a deciding factor. Two working legs under a persons body and the desire to move on are all that should be required. Giving up that level of freedom is the compromise of civilization to some extent I suppose, but should not be the end of discussion or policy. I support your bringing attention to our environment, to our freedom, and to the virtues of holistic existence.

May your experience bring you the satisfaction of knowing that it generates positive conversation among humanity, for conversation is the seed of change.

Safe journey for you and your mule,“ ~Adrian v., San Francisco, CA 9/10/2017

“Hey Mules. Just wanted to say your confidence in self and your life is something I try for every day. You live a life of old. I myself, at 25, seemed to have finally grasped it a little more than before. I currently live in an off grid shack on 2 acres I own in Northern PA with my dog and burro. He’s been carrying a soft pack a bit with minimal weight until I receive my sawbuck and pad in the mail. We walk everywhere, own no vehicle and rarely use electricity and/or modern amenities. When my dream of a pack critter to carry some gear and give up vehicles and hitch hiking and reliance on vehicles so much came about, it was a few years ago and I always tried to read your blog and keep updated. People I’m sure always say how cool it is you do what you do, but none will ever venture forth. I am, despite how egotistical that may sound. I just hear people say about envy and I never fully understood it. Days can be tough, animals stubborn, weather bad, and hunger sometimes but I feel more committed than I have before. I’d definitely love to hear back from you. Take care sir.“ ~Lloyd B., Northern Pennyslvania, 7/2/2017

“Wow! Thank you for doing this. My love to your mules, and to you, from me and my retired horse Max, and Daisy – no longer with us, but made it to 38. This is brilliant…we are up against the Megatropolis. It has to stand still and stop growing. I walk with you in asserting that.“ ~Liz F., Swansea, Wales, United Kingdom 6/28/2017

“If your path should ever find your way here, please stop by and sit a spell, or hang your hat. My daughter is the one that enlighten me about your travels and way of life. So I know my family will be honored to meet the mules. Safe travels!“ ~Burnie B., Redding, CA 6/27/2017

“I just found your page and wanted to reach out as another alternative thinker in Redding. I have a small urban farmstead and grow micro greens as my primary crop and am just toying with other parking lot produce tomatoes, melons, etc. I sold my car 6 years ago and bought a cargo bike for primary transport with my kids. Sending love on your journey and would love to meet sometime. “ ~Heather P., Redding, CA 6/25/2017

“We spotted you and Little Girl yesterday in Anderson. The kids were very excited and I was humbled. It is truly a beautiful journey you are on. Blessings to you. You are truly alive. “ ~Loni L., Anderson, CA 6/24/2017

“Hello! this afternoon, I drove past you as you walked up valley road in Reno. I wondered who you were and saw the website address on the side of the mule’s saddlebag, so I looked it up when I got home. I’m very impressed by what you’re doing!“ ~Susan P., Reno, NV 5/31/2017

“I am wondering if it is necessary to volunteer as a mule packer in a pack station to travel with two mules. How did you begin and learn how to care about your mules? As a mule packer? My project is to buy two mules and to travel with them from North America to South America. We would follow the trails and question the fact that what one sees has not to be taken for granted. For the moment, I am volunteering in a pack station, but my instinct tells me I am losing my time and my dreams!“~Sebastien C., 5/22/2017 Sebastian, volunteering at a pack station is an excellent way to learn how to work with what will be your lifetime companions.

“I’ve been fascinated by your story since I heard about you and your outdoor lifestyle. Also, I’ve looked into depression and found that a top scientist reckoned there was no such thing as depression in the past as people were on the move hunting and foraging too much and got tired and good sleep, etc etc. For me, I’ve been tied up to the house with a piano for many years and my elderly father to look out for. He’s in a home now and I’m going to try a little walk off round Europe with the guitar. Best of wishes and great inspirations. Along my travels, I’ve also found Chi Kung, another amazing magic… living “in the (wrong) system” seems to have evaded us. Anyhow it works a treat. Best wishes for the future. “ ~Simon G., Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, United Kingdom 4/18/2017

“Bless you, John Sears (“Mule”) and your wonderful companions. You have chosen a very special way to give honor to all that Mother Earth & our animal companions provide. May you continue without harm & find much joy & happiness in meeting the challenges of daily living.“ ~Mary, 10/24/2016

Edith and the Mules in Bakersfield

“It was so rewarding to see you and the mules today in Bakersfield. Finally I got to meet you all in person. Safe travel always.“ ~Edith H., Bakersfield, CA 10/21/2016

“We met today. Thank you for stopping today and letting me pet the mules.“ ~Joanne, Fresno, CA 10/10/2016

“A few years past, you were in Escondido, CA spending the night next to my oil distribution plant. I met you and the mules. Been following your travels ever since. May you and the mules continue in good health on your journey.“ ~Bob S, Escondido, CA 10/7/2016

“Dear Friend, I am taking the liberty to call you friend because I deeply admire your lifestyle and insight in life and feel as though I know you. I run a donkey rescue in Southern Arizona just NW of Tucson and have a passion for not only donkeys and mules but all of nature. My husband and I live a very simplistic and purposeful off the grid lifestyle surrounded only by our animals and wildlife. Should you ever be traveling in our direction and need a place to rest your animals (and yourself as well) please keep our open invitation in mind. Best wishes to you and the critters.“ ~Sandy, Southern Arizona 9/15/2016

“Your journeys: I am writing to let you know that if you are ever near Carlton Oregon (about 36 miles southwest of Portland), I have plenty of room for you to set up camp for yourself and the mules to recharge. I have a barn that only houses a couple cats now and then and your mules could also have shelter and recharge. Water is accessible and there is running water in the barn. I also have my own small orchard and you are welcome to pick pears/apples as you need them. I so admire what you are doing and hope that your story travels as far as you do! Best wishes for fair weather and good health to all of you!“ ~Peg K., Carlton, OR 8/24/2016

“Good day to you Mule. My daughter and I saw you at the post office yesterday right before noon and I wanted to tell you what an inspiration you are to everyone. Bless you and the mules and continue to inspire people especially the young!“ ~Marlene W., Fresno, CA 6/26/2016

“We have sikh temples, in almost every town and you can stop by try Indian food, and also will not have any problem for your mules to stay. I can send you address of the nearest Sikh temples. You are one tough person and your animals out in these hot, sunny days. We are proud of you, good job.“ ~Shaminder D., Visalia, CA 6/25/2016

“Hey Monk, hope you’re doing well. I love your way of life and your philosophy. I am 26, living in southern California and have had it with the modern unthinking mode of living promoted here! I’m giving/throwing away my clutter tonight to live a purposeful life. No matter where I went or how much money I accumulated, despite my college degrees, the feeling of heartbreak and frustration has only grown more intense for the past few years. I’m so glad I read your blog, and others who are living free too. You give me confidence that it’s possible to live in accordance with nature and my own heart.

Are you interested in Buddhism or the old Druidic way?

Living rightly is the philosopher’s duty in this world, and I would like to shoot the breeze with you someday about whatever. I’ll be wandering the coast until I wander somewhere else, but I do hope to meet you along the way brother. Take care Monk and Mules!
 ~Sean., Southern California 6/17/2016

“I just saw the news of your Declaration on The Long Riders’ Guild page and from there found your website. Thank you for your work to keep equestrian travel legal! I am preparing for my own 48 state ride, most of which will be along roads, and without a doubt I will also need to stop to rest in public places. It is a terrible shame that law enforcement of so many areas treat this as illegal. In planning my route I tried to find laws pertaining to the legalities of equine travel, and had to reroute a few times to avoid “no horse zones” such as certain parts of National Parks, etc.“ ~Meredith C., 6/16/2016

“I started following you guys on Facebook. I’m a packer in the Sierra Nevada. Thank you for living with your mules. It’s such a bond that develops when you can be with them every day. It’s been the constant in my life, earth, love, my animals. They have given me so much and asked for nothing in return. You are an inspiration. “ ~Beth L, Sierra Nevada, CA 6/14/2016

“God bless you Bro! I read your statement of freedom and movement on how we as USA citizens and taxpayers have rights by default to travel and use the ways and lands designated as ‘public’. As an avid bicycle rider and swimmer, I am confounded by all the totalitarian laws placed on highways and public lakes and rivers. If you and I are automatically and lawfully forced to fund the maintenance and oversight of these lands and waters, we better also be allowed to travel on them. At least in the Middle Ages, the King and nobles did not try to smooth talk and say the areas were off limits for safety and public good. The Lords of old would just say out my forest or I out you to the Sword as my Blood is more Danegeld than your chattel self. Cheers and keep moving through and using our lands as a good steward does. Bravo with your Declaration of Emergency!!  “ ~Count Roland via Instagram 6/14/2016

“I just wanted to say I was hiking yesterday up in the Wind Wolves Preserve, where I came across your camp. I saw your chests with your website 3mules.com written on it. Really interesting what you do, I’m very impressed. I passed by two of your mules as well. I definitely was NOT expecting to see them, haha!“ ~Jake, CA 6/2/2016

“Giday 3 mules. I am from Australia. I would like to let you know of a book I am reading. Beneath Whose Hand, the Autobiography of R.M.Williams. I am sure you will find it most interesting. R.M.W packed camels all over outback Australia in his younger years. He talks of the National Bicentennial Trails. A trail that covers the distance from top of Queensland travels though New South Wales and down into Victoria high country. You way of life is amazing. I hope you and the mules have your safe travels by foot on Earth. My friend and I have done a few portions of NBT with our horses. We are in the process of acquiring pack gear so as we can travel further and stay overnight.“ ~Yantha K., Australia 5/29/2016

“Here is to your case turning out in your favor. Several years ago, I saw you and the mules traveling down Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks. I have been following you since. You are doing all of us a great service.“ ~Deborah J, Pasadena, CA 5/5/2016

“John, I just wanted to thank you for the pleasure of walking a couple of miles with you today in Eagle Rock. Looking forward to meeting again.” George Gerdes, 5/4/2016

“Hi, I saw you this morning near the airport on Vineland in North Hollywood. I just saw you on Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank. Your lifestyle is simple and I admire that. I hope you find shelter every night for the rest of time. Say hi to the mules.” ~Jill, Burbank, CA 4/29/2016

“Just read your story in the Daily Dot and couldn’t resist putting it up in my little paper. From the hills of Donegal in Ireland we send all blessings and safe travel. Cheers!”~Miles, Donegal, Ireland 4/17/2016

“Hello Mules! I just found out about you and your mules from a friend of mine. I have to say, I love what you are doing. We live in an absolutely beautiful world and we should all get out and explore it! Thank you for doing this! You and your mules have put a smile on my face and in my heart! I live in Salinas, CA. I hope you can stop by again sometime on your journey! I’d love to get a picture with all of you! Hope you all have a great day! Keep on keeping on!” ~Laura B, Salinas, CA 2/19/2016

“Yesterday coming back from surfing I drove by and saw the 3mules.com. Spent the night checkin gout the YouTube content, blog posts and Facebook. Today on my way back to surf, I saw 3 Mules down passing Somis near Camarillo. I pulled over, was stoked to see you guys again, offered a banana and 20 bucks, thanked for the spiritual message and wished you a happy journey. I always feel inspired by free souls. “ ~Jr Zamora, 1/21/2016

Message received on 3 Mules Facebook page on 5/3/2016 from Fan T., Los Angeles, CA

“I saw you in Moorpark on January 19, 2016. I thought “What on earth? Three mules? You don’t see that everyday.” I looked up your website from reading it off your pack box. I was so intrigued that I rushed home to get a couple of bags of carrots, bottled water, canned goods and loaded them into a bag to give to you. But when I came back, you were gone! I was so upset that I drove all over the neighborhood til I found you again. You seem like a worldly and kind man.. And I just wanted you to know that you brightened my day! I will be following you on your website and I will put you and the mules in my prayers. Happy Travels, Fellow human being!” ~Leslie K., Moorpark, CA, 1/19/2016

“I saw you yesterday on Los Angeles Avenue in Simi Valley. I instantly felt humbled and thrilled to see you ambling west, in the late afternoon sun. Three lovely animals and a cheerful-looking dude, all impressively outfitted, going somewhere. And now I know where, why and how. The glimpse itself, and now the full picture. Thank you. A special human endeavor.” ~Ruth D., Simi Valley, CA, 1/13/2016

“Today as I was driving up Figueroa in Highland Park I saw you and your mules walking towards Colorado Blvd. We usually don’t see mules taking a stroll in our neck of the woods. To be honest, I was a little concerned as the mules looked pretty weary. Since then I’ve been reading about you and your beloved mules. Very interesting. I admire your resiliance and curiosity about this world we live in. Good luck and safety in your many journeys.“ ~Jeanne H., Highland Park, CA, 1/3/2016

Roger and his mule Tom Dooley

“I love your journey, thanks for sharing. My mom is a mule woman and she lives in Idaho and has been following your trip. If my dad were still alive he would be thrilled to have met you, he quite often took a small string of mules to the Sierra Nevadas and would travel for weeks in solitude. This is my dad Roger and his mule Tom Dooley in 1999. Okay, safe travels and have a blessed day. If you come this way and need anything please let me know. My family would be happy to help in any way.” ~Julia E., Fallbrook, CA 12/19/2015

“We both are Germans and actually travelling with a rented motorhome till 5th of January, in moment we are not for away from Tucson, Arizona. We saw you on 15th of December at Chula Vista near San Diego. You was so interesting for us, that we took a foto and we made the mistake, that we didn’t stopped and talked with you. Here is foto from that day,  our best wishes to you and your further trip. Our best greetings.” ~Margit + Peter, Germany 12/18/2015

“May your trails be lined with the memories of being out in the open air.” ~Jillian R, 11/23/2015

Hi there, you just came by our house on Main Street in Orange. We had no idea who you were. We saw the website on your pack bags and immediately came to read up on your mission and why there were was a man with mules walking down the street (not something we see every day, and just a beautiful sight). I wanted to share with you this photo my son took of your 3 mules in front of our house. If I had known your mission, instead of standing there staring in awe, I will have offered water to the mules and yourself for that matter. I apologize for being oblivious, I’m sure you could have used it. I wish you a very eventful trip through our beautiful county of Orange. I am now a follower and hope to see you again….I will not make the same mistake again! Best wishes.” ~Lisa, Orange, CA 11/23/2015

“Thank you Mules for sharing your time with my family and neighbors. You have touched our hearts. Always feel welcome to come home for some rest and good eats. Thank you again brother.” ~Vincent L, Westminster, CA 11/22/2015

I saw you on the road today twice going through Castaic and I was so happy to see someone walking with animals. Me and my mom wanted to stop and talk to you out of interest in what you were doing but because we were on a road going too fast we felt it inconvenient. This is a huge problem the idea that I am too busy to talk to a fellow human when the reality is that talking and gaining another’s perspective is more important then shopping or watching the idiot box. The things that this culture deem important in reality have no long term impact and are mostly for the ego. After witnessing part of your journey and reading your website you have inspired me to do what I’ve been wanting to do for years, to live simplistically, to slow down, to be one with nature and to love every living thing. How can I embark on a similar journey? Any advice on living as we were created to live? I think you are amazing and I want to help you in anyway I can on your journey. Thank you so much giving me perspective and the push I’ve needed for years.” ~Mary L, Castaic, CA 11/12/2015

“Dear Mule, just heard you on NPR. Your story made me weep at the hardship you and your traveling companions endure in delivering your message to the world. I am also 67 years old, and you’ve given me hope that others might listen to the voices speaking out about the rights of creatures other than humans, as well as hope that some might realize that we do not own this planet, but that the planet is only giving us a place to stay for a while. Thanks so much for that. I wish you and your friends the best in finding green pastures. ”  ~Marilyn M, Endicott, New York 10/6/2015

“John, thank you for all you are doing to raise awareness for the need of a interstate trail and the destruction of our wilderness throughout this country. You and the mules are an inspiration to all! I’m am looking for mules to do the same thing as you on a smaller scale here in Kansas. Good luck to you and the mules and have a safe journey. We will continue to watch and enjoy your travels.”  ~Doug, 9/17/2015

“I was at 7-11 in Strawberry/Mill Valley a few moments ago (8/15/15 4:45pm) in my car opening an ice cream bar, and you walked right by. What an extraordinary site! I was able to drive by and see the web site, and to see your smiling face. Thank you for the beautiful message you are spreading. You inspire me and I will share this with whomever I can. Keep on trekking. I love you!” ~Kristine, Mill Valley, CA 8/15/2015

“Saw you guys on Novato Blvd in Novato yesterday, late afternoon. WHAT A TREAT! Safe travels to you and your crew. I love mules, and think your lifestyle and trek are very cool.” ~Sarah, Novato, CA 8/6/2015

“We saw you tending to the mules in Geyserville and packing up in the morning near the sculptures. Hope you the mules travel through again soon. May your journey be safe and well-heard.” ~Sefanie and Wyett, Geyserville, CA 8/3/2015

It was so much fun to have you and your mules stop by our senior retirement community  and visit with our residents and staff on June 16.“ ~Laurie Taylor, Atria Carmichael Oaks Senior Living, Engage Life Director , 7/17/2015

The Mules visiting the residents at Atria Carmichael Oaks Senior Living

“My thanks to John and the Three Mule Journey group! I’m a big fan of outdoor experiences and believe in the therapeutic value of connecting with animals….and your Mules seemed very dear! Much gratitude to you all for providing this opportunity!” ~Tamberly Mott, Divisional Engage Life Innovation Director, 7/17/2015

I salute you sir. Thank you for your dedication.  I agree with you 100%. If you ever make it out to southeastern Indiana, you are welcome to stay. Again…………..from one old guy mule owner to another, thank you!” “~Howard CIndiana 7/7/2015

Dear Mules: You walked by my house in Carmichael coming from American River. We’ve been following you since. My daughter just saw you yesterday at the Court House. I have an uncle that was not going to play into life the way other people did. He was diagnosed with something that was going to kill him. This is mid 1970’s. He buys three horses and takes his daughters from Iowa to Reno on horse. They sold the horses in Reno and took the train down to “Frisco.” He finished the trip, had not died, and then decided he would go on the hobo trail for a year. He did and wrote short stories about his adventures. He still didn’t die. Not till 35 years later and a very full life. He gave his daughters wonderful skills and memories. When you come back through Carmichael, I have good old grubb for you. My family would enjoy meeting you. There’s even room for your three partners to have a meal. I do plan to keep following you. Thank you for your dedication to a real cause.“ ~Susan C, Carmichael, CA, 6/19/2015

My friend and I met you on Fair Oaks Blvd yesterday in Sacramento. You were kind enough to explain your mission and journey to us. Lady, thank you for being so friendly. I wish you could visit school and let children known how important your message is for their future quality of life. We need your message and reminder. I thought about your journey all day. God and nature bless you and the 3 mules for what you remind us of the beauty and need for nature and open spaces in our world. You made me think of John Muir and his very similar message and warning so long ago. You and your mules are an important reminder and a blessing.“ ~Jane S, Sacramento 6/17/2015

I was sitting at my dining room table when three mules with their human were walking up my road. I was full of unaswered questions, but happy to see you on your journey. Take care and be well! Happy Trails!” ~Cynthia H, 6/16/15

Love reading about your life adventure. As a cub scout pack leader in Orinda, near Berkeley, you are an inspiration that would be great for these young boys to learn about. Next time you are up this way, I’d like to introduce my scouts to you, if possible. Bravo on your quest.” ~Drew W, Orinda, CA 6/8/15

I would like to commend you to the work you are doing. I also believe that humanity is wasting and destroying the planet. We need more people like yourself willing to stand for this cause. I believe in saving the planet and it angers me to see people polluting and wasting the natural resources we can’t afford to waste. If you need help with anything or if there is anyway I can join you in your cause I’m so interested. Thank you for taking the time to push for a reform that calls the government to take action to this issue. Keep doing such a wonderful thing.” ~Anna V, 5/29/15

Thank you for reminding us of the beauty that we so often take for granted. Glad to see you and the mules are still on the road. Happy trails to you all.” ~Debbie, 5/10/15

My mom gave you water, coffee and muffins when you stayed at Alhambra Valley Road and Bear Creek Road in Martinez.” Checked out the latest news on the four of you. Hopefully a change will happen in America. Keep it up.” ~Rene J., Martinez, CA 5/3/15

Saw you today on Wible Road and thought, ‘gee, what a strange sight for this side of town!’. I grew up in Rosedale, another area of Bakersfield, where, as a kid, horses were a common sight. However now, it’s filled with housing developments. I was touched by the sight of your mules and quite delighted! It brought a smile to my face! I love what you are doing and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers…Blessings and traveling mercies to you as you journey forward.” ~Julie H., 4/10/15

I love what you are doing.. Keep up the walk!” ~Elina S., 4/3/15

Read about you and your mules in the Santa Barbara News-Press. Loved your story and what you do. If you are still in Santa Barbara, you and your mules are welcome to stay up here on the Mesa. I have a fenced in yard, some grass for the mules to eat, and close by is the Douglass preserve. Kinda off the main path – but anyway, keep on treking!” ~Kathy, 3/22/15

We saw you on Los Feliz and San Fernando in Glendale today. I read about your mission on the internet. You are an amazing man and you have seriously made me think about our earth, it’s beauty and the people who should truly have the right to rest on it. Thank you, Mule, for your sacrifice and your selfless dedication to this mission. I am sad that this “urban jungle” we all live in must be so hard on you at times compared to the open land. I don’t think I’ll ever forget you and the 3 mules and you will always be in my prayers.” ~Penelope, 3/6/15

“We read your letter last night at the Norco City Council. We as an animal loving community take pride in the fact you stayed with us on your journey. It is with hope you do accomplish your mission. We in Norco salute you on your journey and wish you much success.” ~Herb Higgins, Mayor of Norco, 3/5/15

We saw u all walking in Monrovia this morning. You and your mules are beautiful. Thanks for being there. It made our day.” ~Jameela and Wylan (3 years old), 3/4/15

Saw you heading south on Newport thru Tustin January 13, 2015 or so. Glad to see you Mules doing some living, no one here knows how to live a life or what its for. Thanks for the inspiration, seeing you gave me hope. Be safe, travel long and far.” ~Tom M., 3/4/15

My niece saw you today right in front of work. She told me, I looked you up and found you on internet and facebook. This is wonderful, been reading about you all evening. Sorry I missed you in Rancho Cucamonga. I agree with your message. I will continue to follow your travels and share your story every chance I get. Safe travels. God Bless. Hope to run into you one day…..” ~Bonnie P., 3/2/15

I saw you in Corona on Ontario Street. I drove by and was so excited to see the mules and you standing there. I love animals and to see them free out not in a cage it was awesome. They were grazing on someone’s lawn eating grass.  I yelled at my daughter look check those out the beautiful mules. You could tell they lived out in the wild and they were so beautiful and the man standing there just looked so happy. Then, today at the gym I saw you on the news just for a brief second I didn’t catch the whole thing, but I found out you had a web page. So, I looked you up this evening and I think what a wonderful thing you’ve been doing. I see you have a third mule now.  I hope you all have a wonderful journey wherever you go. Please be safe and give the mules a hug and a kiss from me. Thank you for reading. ~Michelle, 2/27/15

I’m only as trapped as I allow myself to become. Your journey and message is wonderful. Keep on walking.” ~Craig H., 2/27/15

I just saw you on the NBCLA4 News. I’m so amazed on this journey you’re accomplishing and the reason behind it. I too, also agree with you at the fact that humans are so disconnected with nature and animals because no one thinks about it anymore. We’re so consumed with technology. I personally love nature and always take time out of my day to look at the sunset or stargaze at night for a while. The world is a beautiful place and humans take that for granted. It makes me so happy that there’s still people like you out there, having an advocacy for animals and nature. I hope one day, I’ll encounter you and your 3 mules. I’m supporting you. Keep doing what you’re doing and I hope you have a nice night sir!” ~Jole H, 2/26/15

I saw you were in town (Corona) & sorry I missed you. If you are coming back at some point, please let me know. ~Eugene Montanez, Mayor, City of Corona, 2/22/15

I saw you yesterday in Vista, CA, where I have lived with my husband and 3 children for 20+ years now. We saw you grazing your beautiful animals near the road by the Vista Civic Center. Such a beautiful sight! We thought we were seeing things or had possibly been transported in time  until we went home and I googled you and read your incredible story. I have since shared your story on my facebook page this morning. I hope you will approve of the things I wrote. You are an inspiration to many….the voice of a simpler time, freedom for all and the right to shared spaces. Keep up your wonderful journey, stay safe and know that you have another friend in this neck of the woods! We wish you continued positive energy on your journey for you and your beautiful mules! Hoping our paths may cross again one day. Have a wonderful day.” ~Carol and Jim V, 2/13/15
