The Mules live and reside in this place of one human being, alone but never alone, a place for anybody and everybody, traveling with his or her animal companion in any one of all four directions how they choose, when they choose, living, moving with respect and reverence for this place we call Earth, one step at a time, all day every day.

“Nice to meet you. I was blown away by the well packed mules. I was on the phone with a friend from the track and I literally said I got to go there’s something amazing happening! If someone was to say I was going to meet a nomad today I would have said liar liar pants on fire. In any case when you went to WinCo the activity started. I don’t know why I forgot to tell you, mostly because when I promise to watch the mules after I gave you the lofty amount of $6.
I realized this was a responsibility. I stood watch and the action began. I did not record it but I should have because people were coming up, wanting to interact with the mules. Which would be normally fine if the owner’s present. Plus they acted like they needed some downtime.
But one thing was very clear with the first two people actually saw you leave, because they said, ‘yes I saw him going to the store.’ I said if you saw him leave why come saying me for permission?? So I told them the truth…pointing to your grey that one turned a hip to me. If they pull back will you help me catch them? and then they walked on…. Quickest way to get rid of people is asking for help or accept responsibility for their actions.
I stood for the first 15 minutes then realized I better get the car around, you might be awhile. I had many happy spectators until one guy in a broken down jalopy had the audacity to criticize. I was on the speakerphone actually a video call, with my eye on the mules of course. The man tried to threaten me and say he was going to take the mules to his house that they needed water that in 10 minutes the SPCA. Too much energy on a non-subject. At first tried to explain. I told him this is what this man does for a living, a way of life. They’re in better condition than some I know. Finally, I forgot to tell you.. I just stood up for myself and mules. Said should mind your own business and move on!! I don’t think I’ve ever said that to anybody.

“A brighter day today. You and your mule passed by me as I was waiting for a bus on Mission Street in San Francisco today.
It really warmed my heart and took me back to other places in my life. Though I live in the City now that was not always so. Many years ago I was a cattle ranch hand in Washington State. I did not ride horses, only a tractor, but it was a lifestyle I truly enjoyed and the my favorite job of any I’ve ever had. It was self-gratifying to be in the country, in the out of doors, and with the animals.
A few years later I traveled to Africa with the US Peace Corps, and again found myself working with animals. Mostly the sheep and goats of sedentary farmers. There lies the dilemma. Sedentary agriculture there long ago brought about a myriad of boundaries, fences, roads, communities, and highways to connect them. All of these cut off traditionally nomadic lifestyles and created conflict which continues even today. Most of the U.S. went through this about 150 years ago as you well know, and maybe in some very rural areas still does.
I have visited your website and agree with your observation. Today there is no safe and effective passage from state to state for anything other than motor-vehicles or aircraft, and rarely an open place to stay without fee or trespassing. In other words, people are not free to move about and particularly not without financial means which should not have to be a deciding factor. Two working legs under a persons body and the desire to move on are all that should be required. Giving up that level of freedom is the compromise of civilization to some extent I suppose, but should not be the end of discussion or policy. I support your bringing attention to our environment, to our freedom, and to the virtues of holistic existence.
May your experience bring you the satisfaction of knowing that it generates positive conversation among humanity, for conversation is the seed of change.

I have an uncle that was not going to play into life the way other people did. He was diagnosed with something that was going to kill him. This is mid 1970’s. He buys three horses and takes his daughters from Iowa to Reno on horse. They sold the horses in Reno and took the train down to “Frisco.” He finished the trip, had not died, and then decided he would go on the hobo trail for a year. “I saw you in Corona on Ontario Street. I drove by and was so excited to see the mules and you standing there. I love animals and to see them free out not in a cage it was awesome. They were grazing on someone’s lawn eating grass. I yelled at my daughter look check those out the beautiful mules. You could tell they lived out in the wild and they were so beautiful and the man standing there just looked so happy. Then, today at the gym I saw you on the news just for a brief second I didn’t catch the whole thing, but I found out you had a web page. So, I looked you up this evening and I think what a wonderful thing you’ve been doing. I see you have a third mule now. I hope you all have a wonderful journey wherever you go. “I just saw you on the NBCLA4 News. I’m so amazed on this journey you’re accomplishing and the reason behind it. I too, also agree with you at the fact that humans are so disconnected with nature and animals because no one thinks about it anymore. We’re so consumed with technology. I personally love nature and always take time out of my day to look at the sunset or stargaze at night for a while. The world is a beautiful place and humans take that for granted. Such a beautiful sight! We thought we were seeing things or had possibly been transported in time until we went home and I googled you and read your incredible story.
